Why buy a Roy Folland kayak kit?

This isn't very long. It's worth reading if you're thinking about buying a kayak kit.

Before you decide to purchase anything of value, particularly something that you will probably keep and enjoy for many years, you would be wise to compare a few of the available alternatives. You need to satisfy yourself that what you are getting is actually worth the money you will pay. It's a good idea not to base your decision on price alone.

Having built many kayak kits before we started producing our own designs, about 8 years ago, we understood the difficulties and problems that face kit builders and we determined that we could and would eliminate these difficulties completely. Having a long career in woodworking, boat construction, engineering and design, including the study of hull designs, we knew that we had the knowledge and the ability to bring the kayak kit business to a higher and professional level, and we believe that we've done it.

Our hull designs are created and tested in the same way as the most advanced high performance sail and yacht designs are, it doesn't matter what the ultimate use is, all hull designs follow the same basics. We then go through a rigorous testing program that requires extensive paddling sessions, changes where necessary and then more paddling sessions. The first kayak that we developed, the Sea Wolf, went through two and a half years of testing and development before we released it.

Was it worth it? We think so. All of the expert paddlers that tried Sea Wolf and tested it were ecstatic about its handling. Beginner's find it stable, it tracks well and turns easily. One Sea Wolf owner in the Richmond Virginia area checked out our competition, paddled their kayak and came back and told us "You are so far ahead of them its unbelievable" He loved the way the Sea Wolf paddled.

Design is only one aspect. You also need to be able to build your kayak accurately and without difficulty.
Our Kit Builder's Manual has been very carefully put together. It contains detailed instructions for every single step together with a professionally developed illustration for each step. You simply follow along completing each step in sequence. Many people have told us that it is the best builder's manual they have seen

Each of our kits also includes all of the alignment jigs and bending jigs that are required. You don't have to make any yourself. This ensures that the hull panels will be assembled properly and accurately. Simple hull assembly jigs guarantee that the hull goes together as it should. Bending jigs for the hatch covers ensure that these items are properly built.

Finally, all of the plywood parts are cut to shape within 5/1000 of an inch on a computer-controlled machine (CNC). Our proprietary finger joints are cut at the same time. The sheer clamps and sheer strakes (rub rails) are run through a planer on all four sides for a very close match and the joints on these are also precut. Curved, light weight I beams and additional deck supports are precut.

We are not a large company. Our objective is to design and produce the finest quality kayak kit available. We prefer to remain small enough to devote our energies to this goal and continue to strive towards better products and to provide timely assistance whenever it's needed. We want to make sure that you get personalized attention and help if you call us about anything. We have a tremendous amount of pride in what we do and thoroughly enjoy what we are doing.

Other kayak kit companies are big. Some of them sell as many kits in a couple of month as we do in a year. That's OK with us, we have no desire to become a high volume producer. We will continue to be a high quality producer.

All of this adds up to a high end, high quality kit that leaves nothing to chance and includes everything you need.
